Just finished watching Gnarls Barkley’s first set on SNL, and the group continues to amaze me. “Run” is a manic, mod, James Bond-type number that defies categorizing. In fact, most of what I’ve heard from Gnarls Barkley defies any genre. If it’s hip-hop, I might start taking that stuff a little more seriously. But this is either a step up on the evolutionary hip-hop scale or a dagger through its heart. Gnarls Barkley creates songs that you can hum (Have you gotten “Crazy” out of your head yet?) and its nod to R&B’s roots is authentic, yet refreshing.
